In the wake of rising scarcity of water, it has become necessary to have maximum use of water. For this purpose, New Delhi Municipal Corporation has initiated a rainwater harvesting system in areas falling under its jurisdiction. Rainwater harvesting is a technique to store rainwater for various purposes. The NDMC has a plan to install RWH pits at various places, such as gardens and parks. These pits have ‘crosswave’ technology, which is an economical solution for harvesting rainwater.
When it comes to the Construction of pits for rainwater harvesting in Delhi, a small amount of cement and bricks are required. The modules of recycled Polypropylene are placed over one another in the pits before they are wrapped in Geo-textile to improve water quality. One needs to spend less time to install them. Their maintenance cost is also low. As the structure is load-bearing, the land above the tank is usable for the construction of parks and paved area parking. In addition, the high void ratio gives 95% water storage capacity. Rainwater collected from RWH pits are stored in four types of tanks, which are used for irrigation, beautification work and fountains.
