Overview

Dwelling unit area is the total sum of the area walls, floors and ceiling. Any part of the building that includes living facilities, including rooms or a room with toilet, bathing, kitchen or laundry facilities, such as shelters, dormitories, boarding homes and assisted living facilities is called a dwelling unit. Because of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), affordable dwelling units under PMAY-U have been possible in the country and over51 lakh dwelling units have been sanctioned in the last three years under this scheme. This number of dwelling units is much higher than erstwhile housing scheme wherein only 12.4 lakh houses were sanctioned.

What are Dwelling Units and What are Their Different Types?

Dwelling units are sections of larger structures, where individuals or family live, eat and sleep. They are private living quarters where people live away from rest of the residents living in buildings. They are found in a variety of structures, such as apartments, single-family homes and condominium buildings. Many rooms in a large structure such as a motel or hotel are also found. Families or individuals can live, sleep and eat from others in these units. This is the reason they are called separate living quarters. Different types of dwelling units in urban housing include the following:

Private Residence:

This type of dwelling unit is occupied by private households. Flat, single-family homes, boarding houses, and portions of commercial buildings are its examples. These housing units are meant for the accommodation of less than six individuals.

Double Dwelling Units:
